One sunny day in October 50 cadets stepped off a coach and wandered around an airport terminal that had been abandoned over thirty years ago. They were at Nicosia International Airport, midway through a camp that had also included trips to Waterworld in Aiya Napa, walking in the mountains and flights in a Griffin Helicopter. CWO Wild, Sgt Cole and Cdt Horton, along with 47 other cadets from West Mercian and Herts & Bucks Wings, escaped the Autumn chill to spend two weeks at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. Aside from a minor power cut, several thunderstorms and bed inspections they were able to make the most of the warm weather, exploring both the RAF base and the local area. All the cadets on the camp were divided into one of four flight, each competing against the other three for the overall ‘Best Flight’ award. Activities included a visit to 417 Maritime Sqn, which involved wearing a rather ridiculous sea survival suit and leaping into the water. There was also a chance to go off-roading in Army Land Rovers with Army driving instructors - CWO Wild and Sgt Cole were even able to drive the Land Rovers. Evenings were spent relaxing at the Families Club or at the bowling alley. Everyone also went out for a meal at a Chinese restaurant in Akrotiri town and to a barbeque by the sea. The camp concluded with a disco and, on the final morning, a presentation. Sgt Cole was awarded ‘Best SNCO’ for his work as D flight commander and CWO Wild a plaque for her work as overall SNCO on camp. All three had a fantastic time, met some fantastic people and would highly recommend attending an overseas camp in Cyprus.
